November 11, 2009 | Author: southwell | Filed under: Events

If you're planning to come to the special Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, Nov. 19 - plan to come a little early. The Brainy Bunch will perform a reader's theater version of Dav Pilkey's 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving at 12:20. (The lunch schedule for that day has been revised again. Our lunch time is at 12:33 for that day only.)

Addition and Subtraction in Second Grade

October 19, 2009 | Author: southwell | Filed under: Events

This is a rather long post. You may download a pdf file here if you prefer. (The numbers line up better in the pdf version too.)   The way your child is learning mathematics probably looks somewhat different from what you remember from your own elementary school days. Most of us learned to add and subtract using a particular algorithm (a rule or procedure for solving a problem). To add, you may have been taught to “carry” and to subtract you may have learned to “borrow.” Many of us can remember doing pages and pages of computation problems as practice that were designed primarily to help us remember the steps of the algorithm. Because these methods ...

Fall Conferences

October 7, 2009 | Author: southwell | Filed under: Events

October 19 is the designated conference day for the fall semester. Since it is difficult to fit all conferences in one day I will be scheduling conferences on other days as well. Your child should bring home a fall conference form today. Please fill it out and return it to school when you are ready to schedule a conference. This will ensure that we cover all of your concerns and allow me to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Take a look…

Then "Mystery Reader" is the job for you! This is how it works: 1. Send me five clues about your identity. The first clue should be very vague and each clue after that should make it increasingly easier for the children to figure out who you are. For example, these are clues a former parent gave: 1. I am not a mother. 2. I don’t like to go shopping. 3. I am a girl scout and a boy scout. 4. People pay me to argue for them. 5. My beard is getting grizzled. 2. Let me know what time and day of the week is best for you. 11:25 on Monday, Tuesday, or Friday is good for us - but if that doesn’t work for you ...
